Richard F. Powers Is Honored with Distinguished Service Award

Top Honor Awarded by the Council of Logistics Management

Powers, President of Insight, Inc., received the Council of Logistics Management's Distinguished Service Award at the organization's annual meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on October 17, 1999. He is the 35th person to receive this award since it was inaugurated in 1965 as a tribute to John Drury Sheahan, pioneer logistics consultant and a partner in the consulting firm that bore his name.

The Council of Logistics Management presents the Distinguished Service Award annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the art and science of logistics management. The award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual for achievement in logistics.

Dr. Powers earned his PhD in management information systems from the University of Minnesota, and an MBA in distribution management from Michigan State University. He is a founding member of the Management Science Roundtable and a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences. He is also a past president of the Council of Logistics Management.

Prior to founding Insight, a firm which designs and implements logistics management support systems, Dr. Powers headed the analysis of the largest distribution system study ever undertaken for the Department of Defense. The results of that study formed the blueprint which has been followed over the past twenty years for the Department of Defense's logistics infrastructure. Dr. Powers also served as an advisor to the Secretary of Defense on defense manpower and logistics policies and programs. In addition to his other activities, Dr. Powers has taught in the graduate management programs of several universities in the Washington, DC area.

He has given generously of his time to share his thoughts in speaking roles at the Council of Logistics Management's annual conferences and roundtable meetings. From 1984-1991, Dr. Powers served as a member of the CouncilÍs Executive Committee. He worked jointly with Dr. Bernard La Londe on the 1993 CLM Delphi study to identify the roles and attributes of logistics professionals in the 21st century.

Kevin A. O'Laughlin, partner with Ernst & Young, and Chairperson of the Award Selection Committee, delivered the testimonial to Dr. Powers during a ceremony on Sunday afternoon, October 17, 1999, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and presented him with a plaque to symbolize the honor.
