Computers Used To Process Thousands of Survivors
Atlanta, Georgia – October 24, 2005 - Canvas Systems, a leading global provider of pre-owned Information Technology (IT) equipment and systems, announces the donation of computing equipment to The Salvation Army and the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC) for use in their hurricane relief efforts. Canvas Systems donated networking equipment, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), laptop computers, Internet connectivity, and servers to help these organizations process citizens displaced by the hurricanes. The donated equipment will improve communications among hospital staff and agency sites, help with case management, assist with job search and placement for victims, and keep track of patients and medication.
The Salvation Army of metro Atlanta’s distribution centers and warehouse were bombarded with emergency assistance requests from over 19,500 individuals displaced by the storms. The donated computers will also be used in The Salvation Army’s warehouse to create a logistics and distribution model, in conjunction with UPS, which will better prepare the agency for future disasters. This includes setting up processes to efficiently sort goods coming in to the warehouse and tracking inventory so volunteers can easily retrieve items for orders going across the country to relief sites. After the relief efforts are over, the donated computers will be used for tutoring, job counselling, adult education, and vocational programs.
“From sending emergency disaster services equipment and personnel to the Gulf Coast to assisting the hundreds of survivors relocated to our area, The Salvation Army is on the frontlines of service,” said Major Paul Fuller, Salvation Army Disaster Director. “This computer donation from Canvas Systems has greatly improved our ability to service individual requests.”
“When a disaster strikes, equipment availability and quick delivery are key components of any recovery strategy,” said Sean Murphy, VP and co-founder of Canvas Systems. “Canvas Systems is pleased to donate equipment and services to help with the recent hurricanes. We all need to come together and help our neighbors in this time of need.”
Due to the influx of patients at UMC, hospital administration and physicians established a temporary clinic and pharmacy to refill countless prescriptions. Numerous injuries related to evacuation, along with problems due to the loss of medications, contributed to the need for computer equipment to keep track of prescriptions, access patient information, and to process medical records. The donation of laptop computers, networking equipment, and uninterruptible power supplies added much-needed capacity to help deliver quality medical services and ensure patients would receive their necessary medications.
“Thanks again for your help during these trying times,” said Jerry McCearley, manager of business services at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
For businesses in the hurricane areas, Canvas offers RES-Q Disaster Assistance Services, a flexible package of services that can be tailored to the specific needs of a given location, application or system configuration. Canvas has assisted many businesses to get back on track immediately by shipping IT, networking, and telephony equipment overnight to rebuild data centers and IT infrastructures.
